On hearing of the passing away of Tanaji, Shivaji is known to have said, "We
have gained the fort but lost the lion". So the fort got its name ‘Sinha
(lion) gad (fort). Previously this fort was known as Kondana.
It was in the year 1670, that Tanaji Malusre scaled the steep hill in the dark with
his men and defeated the forces of Bijapur. According to legends, the Maratha forces
used trained lizards to carry the ropes up the hillside.
The samadhi to Tanaji Malusare stands as a reminder of the bravery and glorious
victory of the Marathas.
