Pune University is located near Ganeshkhind, surrounded by a high square tower (30 meters high), a swimming pool and well kept green trees and lawns. Established on 1948, covering a campus area of about 420 acres. The main building is in Italian-Gothic style, built with the local gray trap rock. The First Vice-Chancellor was Dr. M. R. Jayakar.

The seat of education in Pune, also known as the Oxford of the east, has students from all over the world enrolled for the large number of courses it offers.The world famous Inter- University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA ) is on the university campus. The University has become one of the leading centers for research and teaching in the country.
